Whilst browsing around some health related site I regularly monitor I came across a new addition to the Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Education Councils, a National stocktake of education courses/kits for postgraduate year 1 and 2 doctors.

The Confederation of Post Graduate Medical Councils (CPMEC) is seeking your assistance in a federally funded national stocktake of educational resources for prevocational doctors (post graduate year 1 and 2). If you have, or are aware of education resources that are relevant to prevocational doctors under the Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors, please let us know about it!

National E-Health Strategy Survey

Whilst doing some research tonight I came across a small post on the Victorian Government Health Information Web Site offering the public a chance to contribute to the development of a National E-Health Strategy.

The National E-Health and Information Principal Committee (NEHIPC), a subcommittee of the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council (AHMAC), recently commissioned Deloitte to develop a national e-health strategy. NEHIPC is responsible for providing advice on e-health and information strategies, and promoting collaboration between the Commonwealth, States and Territories to implement these strategies.

The project involves the development of a vision and plan for e-health in consultation with a range of key stakeholders across the country, including consumers, clinicians, health service administrators, academics/researchers, IT vendors, government and relevant other service industries.

Oxfam Trailwalk Sydney

A friend of mine Lorraine has gotten a team together, name eightabreast for this year’s Oxfam Trailwalk Sydney. The walk is 100km and must be finished within 48hours. The walk starts at the beautiful Hawkesbury River and after leading you through more beautiful bush land you finish at Mosman.

The 2008 Trailwalk Sydney event will be held from Friday, August 29 to Sunday, August 31. Since starting in 1981 the Trailwalks have raised a massive $71 million for poor communities around the world.

Microsoft's future in Healthcare Concept

Last night I was lucky enough to see a presentation by Dr David Dembo, Leader - Health & Human Services with Microsoft Australia at the NSW/ACT Medical Student Information Night (more on that later). One of the cool things Microsoft is doing is integrating it's Graphic Modelling Tools, Collaboration Tools (Sharepoint and Office Communications Server) and their Surface Technology. As you will see from the video, this technology does look futuristic, but it is technology either already available to us all or technologies in development in the Microsoft Labs

E-Health goes back to basics

Catching up some news feeds this morning I came across this article from Australia IT about the Australian Federal Government retaking charge of Australia's E-Health Initiatives. Traditionally governments have been accused of not making the investment into Health Technology that it deserves, this is not true. Over the past week I have seen some great projects come out of NSW and other states as well as this promise from the Rudd Government to significantly invest and lead E-Health initiatives across Australia

National Prevocational Medical Education Forum

This year's National Prevocational Medical Education Forum will be held in Hobart and the theme is Riding the wave... This year's event promises to be bigger than ever with the expectation of the biggest delegation in the 13 years the conference has been running. This year's conference it focusing on 6 broad topics:

Junior Doctor Wellbeing
Clinical Education
International Medical Graduates

As always there will be a variety of presentations ranging from pre-conference workshops and forums, keynotes, 30min sessions, 15min sessions and the poster presentations (always a highlight!)

Microsoft Worldwide Telescope enters public beta

Today Microsoft made it's Worldwide Telescope available to the public. This is an amazing product allowing you to explore the sky in the greatest detail yet available to the public. As of today, Microsoft have 12 Terabytes of data for you to view with plans to continually add to this. Head over to the Worldwide Telescope site and check it out!

JMOPortal.com migrated, updated and running again!

Well after a crazy 48 hours trying to fix the problem that has caused JMOPortal.com to be inaccessible for the past 2 days. The error was caused by a problem on the web server and once that was fixed, the software update for the Content Management System (CMS) that runs this site corrupted the database and was irreversible.

Therefore I have no rebuilt the entire site from scratch, so please forgive me if your username is missing at the moment, it will come back in the next 24hours. I have some more work to do over the next few days uploading the previous information.

Once this is done there will be more updates for the site. Some new features that I will be adding to the site over the next few weeks will be Groups, new site design, new forums and increased performance and reliability to name a few and of course a proper logo!!

Rural Preferential Recruitment Evening

This Wednesday I had the pleasure of talking to some 5th year Medical Students at the Rural Preferential Recruitment evening hosted by NSW IMET. It was a pretty good night with a reasonably good turn up. A Rural Preferential Intern position is a position within a Rural Hospital in the NSW Public Health System. The aim is to offer potential trainees who are interested in Rural training the chance to apply directly to a hospital and bypass the main allocation system.

To apply for a Rural Preferential Recruitment position you need to apply directly to the Hospital or the Network which the hospital is in. Head over to the NSW Health Medical Jobs page and you should find it there.

If you're looking for more information about the Rural Hospitals, it's suggested you contact the individual Hospital or NSW IMET

Using Microsoft Silverlight + Deep Zoom to WOW medical students

After all the cool stuff that was show off at this year's MIX08 conference in Las Vegas, I got to thinking how I could use technologies such as Silverlight 2 and Deep Zoom. Two days after MIX08 wrapped up I found out about 2 careers expo, where I would get the chance to convince medical students to choose The Maitland Hospital and Hunter New England Health as a place to commence their careers.

So, the plan so far:

Silverlight base site to be developed
Silverlight embedded videos on lifestyle and training in the Hunter Region, hospitals within the HNE Health Network and Training programs offered within HNE Health.
Deep Zoom photo gallery with high-res photos from around the Hunter Region
